3 Reasons a Per Diem Opportunity is Perfect for New Moms

Are you a new mom? It can seem overwhelming to re-enter the workforce, but at the same time, you want to keep up your nursing skills and your resume. One great option to consider is per-diem nursing work. Per diem (translating roughly to “per day”) is a flexible way to achieve that work-life balance that you so desperately need, especially as a new parent.

Here are just three of the many reasons a per diem opportunity might be right for you:

1.) You set your schedule.

Nurses that work per diem shifts typically get to pick the shifts they want. This allows you to come in when you can and to effectively set your own schedule. If you know you have childcare options available to you on certain days of the week, for example, you can select shifts on those days. On the days you don’t have childcare available, you don’t have to take a shift.

2.) You can turn down assignments if needed.

In most per diem arrangements, the individual responsible for the organization’s schedule will reach out to you with available shifts. The beauty of this type of nursing is that you can decline those shifts if you need to—you do not have to accept shifts that don’t work with your schedule. You aren’t a full-time or part-time employee, meaning you aren’t obligated to log a certain number of hours or be on-call on certain days.

3.) You’ll make a higher income.

Let’s face it: Kids are expensive! When you are working as a new parent, you want those shifts to count for all they’re worth. And because per diem nursing typically offers higher pay in lieu of extensive benefits, you’re likely to make more per shift than even some full-time employees. Again, you’re not a full- or part-time employee when you work per diem. While this means you don’t get the benefits and certain perks that those nurses might have, it also means you tend to make a higher hourly rate.
