Anyone who has spent time in the working world knows how important it is to like the people you work with. Having a good support system while on the job is absolutely essential. So, how do you find a company that truly aligns with your desires in this area? How can you find that workplace family that makes work feel less like, well... work?

Here are some quick tips to find your workplace family:

Focus on the culture.

When it comes down to it, finding the right fit is a culture question above all. If the culture at an organization isn’t right for you, you’ll have a hard time fitting in, not to mention making workplace friends. Before you take a job, be sure to consider what the culture is like. Peruse the company’s social media and web presence; learn about some of the employees on LinkedIn. You’ll probably be able to get a preliminary sense of the culture just by performing these basic steps.

Ask questions in the interview.

Once you secure an interview with a company you’re interested in, you’ve got the perfect opportunity to learn about the culture and determine whether or not you’ll fit in with it. Ask directly about culture in the interview; the hiring manager should be happy to tell you what it’s like to work there day to day, what the other employees are like, and what you can expect from management.

Think about what’s important to you.

Is it an opportunity for advancement? Higher pay? Mentorships? Leadership opportunities? It’s important to think about what you’re looking for out of a job and company, and how that aligns with your goals. When you sign on with a company that has your back, you’re that much closer to finding your workplace family. And that’s good for the company, the rest of your team, and for you.

Give it time.

Remember: you might not find your workplace family right away. You might not recognize that the job you’ve just taken is right for you right away. It’s important to give it time, because you need to settle in and get used to your new position. If, after a few weeks or months, you still feel that you haven’t found the right workplace family and that it’s time for a change, you can consider other options.
