You’ve connected with a candidate after they’ve applied for an open role with your company, or you’ve even had one interview with them. Then, all of a sudden, you lose contact and can’t get in touch with them again. What happened? They ghosted you.

Candidate ghosting is more common than ever. And you need to put a stop to it. Here’s why candidates are ghosting you and what you can do to turn things around:

The interview process takes too long.

How long does it take from the time a candidate first gets an interview set up with your company to the time that they’re completely done with interviews? A week? Two? A month or more? If it’s longer than a few weeks, it’s too long. Candidates aren’t willing to wait around forever to get through the interview process. And the cream of the crop candidates, the ones who really have their pick of who to work for, are definitely not sticking around. It’s time to shorten your interview process down to a few weeks at most; that will help keep candidates from jumping ship because they’ve already found something better in the meantime.

You’re not communicating enough.

How communicative are your hiring managers throughout the hiring process? There is no such thing as too much communication with candidates at this stage. Even if you’re just sending a quick reminder to candidates to let them know they’re still being considered, it’s a great help. Candidates start ghosting when they feel they’ve applied into a black hole and might never hear anything back. So keep your company top-of-mind by remaining engaged in communication with your candidates, no matter how far along they might be in the process.

You’re not competitive in your market.

Don’t forget that one of the simplest reasons your candidates might be ghosting you is because your job offer isn’t competitive. Do your research and find out what other companies are offering in terms of compensation and benefits for roles similar to your open jobs. If you’re able to find jobs that are far more competitive than the ones you’re offering, that’s a problem. Candidates can easily see that, too, and there’s absolutely no reason for them to pick you over a company that will pay them more or offers greater benefits.
